Best Sony VCT-80AV Remote Control Tripod for use with Compatible Sony Camcorders

I have a Sony Z5 camera, so I know I should've bought the 300 dollar version of this tripod, which is probably more sturdy and durable. THERE ARE MANY SONY TRIPOD MODELS, MAKE SURE YOU CHECK ALL OF THEM OUT BEFORE YOU PICK ONE. Sometimes it's not very clear what the differences are, though...
Since I could only afford this one, I have to admit it's pretty awesome considering the price. We all know a decent pro tripod costs at least 300 bucks, but this one does a lot of stuff for a third of that. Bubble level, very smooth panning and tilting, relatively tight and stable, remote control zooming, recording and photo taking on the handle... but to be lightweight and inexpensive, it had to sacrifice something: this one has some parts made in cheap plastic, like the hand crank to raise the height and the locking plate. Treat these with care and don't leave them in direct sunlight, and it'll probably last a few years. Definitely not the last tripod you'll every buy, but does the job.

The Sony HVLIRM Battery IR Light is a great tool to use for a camcorder with a poor night vision. What this tool does, is attaches to a camcorders accessory shoe, or attaches using the supplied accessory shoe if your camcorder does not have one, and extends night vision up to a claimed 100 feet. Indoors, the light can reach 100 feet, but the farther away the object is it will become less defined. Outdoors at night it's a different story.

The way that night vision works, is that the lights are made of infrared light. The light extends in front of the camera, bounces off of objects, returns to the sensor, and the camcorder creates the picture on the screen in grayscale. When you are indoors, there are plenty of objects for the sensors to bounce the light off of, so it can reach 100 feet easily. When your outside, often times the light extends into the area in front of you, only able to hit trees, or anything else within the 100 feet. This is something to keep in mind.

This IR light has two ways of being powered. The first is to use 2 AA batteries. The second is to buy a rechargeable Sony info lithium M series battery. This type of battery can easily be found online. The two available models are the NP-QM71D or NP-QM91D battery pack. However, many stores specializing in batteries have cheaper versions of the same batteries that last just as long, if not longer. On the side of the light, there is a switch with 3 commands. An off switch, and a switch to change between using the AA batteries power, and a switch to use power from a battery pack.

A good practice to use if you have a battery pack is to put both AA batteries, and the battery pack in. This way, if the pack runs out of power, you can simply change the switch to the battery setting, and continue filming. Another great feature is you can adjust how far the IR light reaches. Not only does this prevent extremely close objects become washed out by the brightness, but it also saves the battery life. Overall I give the Sony HVLIRM Battery IR Light 5 out of 5 stars. One tip I will give if you decide to buy this. Buy it on either Amazon or EBay. If you buy it from [...], you may be paying more than twice what you may pay elsewhere.

Thinking about a mini DVD camcorder? You're not alone, that the rapid growth
sector of the camcorder market, with Hitachi, Sony and Panasonic all making more
mini-DVD camcorder.

These camcorders differ from regular digital video cameras, a significant --
that record video on mini-DVD, rather than DV tape. This has a number of
benefits. DVD discs are more robust than tape, and not get chewed in

strange noise from my camera, so you keep in mind.

The second advantage is that DVD discs are random access, compared to tape
where everything is recorded sequentially. This means that it is not necessary
rewind and fast forward to find the clip you want, simply select the menu.

additional side benefit is that a mini DVD camcorder does not have the head for
worn or dirty, as in regular mini DVD cameras.

And thirdly, you can easily watch your movies, removing the DVD
camera and light on any DVD player.

However, there are negative factors. The most siginificant is that the video is
encoded in MPEG-2 on a mini DVD camcorder, compared to the DV format. This
meansrequires specialized software to edit - you can not just use regular
video editing program (unless it specifically supports MPEG-2). And if a Mac user
you're out of luck, because there is MPEG-2 editing applications for Mac

Addition, mini DVD camcorders tend to cost more than similarly specified mini DV
cameras. And the media are also more expensive. However, if you do not intend
edit your movies and do not mind the extra cost, a mini DVD camcorder does notoffer
extraordinary convenience.

Hercules HR-9000 Super Strong Extra Large Aluminum System Hard Case for Digital Cameras and Camcorders (Black) Review

This case comes with the prescored foam and a set of dividers. I did not use the dividers because the foam met all my needs.

Lay out your equipment and note the position of each item. Then pull out the prescored foam blocks to create a place for each item. That's it. Simple, and fun.

I was concerned that tearing out the foam blocks might leave dust and particles behind. But, I have not been able to find any. The blocks seem to come out cleanly.

The case will take a lot of casual abuse: bumping into doors, knocking aginst other gear, etc. Although I have not dropped mine, I feel certain that it, and the gear inside, would survive a three or four foot drop.

I have shipped gear in less well constructed containers, but I would not ship this case or check it at an airport. While I do think the gear inside would survive, I would not want my case to be subjected to that abuse.

If you want a case that can survive a heavy hammer blow, you should pay 0-0 for a solid metal case. If you want a case that can protect your gear from the forces of knocks, mild drops, shuffling about in a car, an so on, then this one will do the job for a fraction of that price.

I like this case very much. It holds a Canon 450D, the two kit lenses, a 50mm prime, Nissin flash, Gossen Meter, extra battery, battery charger, remote, and misc. small items. I always have one of the lenses mounted on the camera, ready to use.

Although Amazon advertised that they might take 4 to 6 weeks to ship, they actually shipped in a few days. I am pleased both with the case and Amazon.

The Hercules HR-9000 works well for my video and sound equipment. It is a perfect size. I have a Canon HV30 camcorder, JuicedLink audio mixer, Sennheiser wireless kit, Shotgun mic, batteries, mis cables and there is room to spare. Like others have said, this case is not going to stand up to too much torture. If you plan to throw this case and contents into the back of a pickup repeatedly, it might not be the case for you. It is adequate if you are careful and take care of your equipment.

The only strange thing is the box from the manuafcturrre states that the outside dimensions are 13 x 10.25 x 5.125 and inside are 12.325 x 9.625 x 4.5. The description from Amazon.com does contain the correct dimensions. The ones on the box are incorrect. Thank You Amazon for getting it right.

In my student days I used camcorders on a daily basis but the prospect of owning one was remote because they were so expensive. This is probably the reason we were reminded so often to take great care when using them at college!

Fortunately, times have changed and the prices of video cameras have come down a great deal and more and more people can afford to purchase one.

The video camera is also pretty much a thing of the past and the age of the digital camcorder has well and truly taken over. If however a camcorder is still slightly out of your price range you could consider purchasing a refurbished model which can usually be quite a bit less expensive and ideal if you are just getting started.

You would be surprised how widely available refurbished camcorders are, I first came across these at an electronics show in Pittsburgh a good few years ago. These shows still travel round the country, you could look out for adverts in your local area. They tend to offer a wide range of products from soft wear and designer clothing to electronics usually at fantastically reduced prices and you can pick up a great bargain. Most of the electronics at these shows are refurbished and this is where you will also find the camcorders.

Buying refurbished goods does not have to spell disaster! If you are sensible and make sure that you ask for a demonstration of the product from the seller and physically check that all the functions are in good working order before you buy you should get as much pleasure from a refurbished model as a new one.
